About Black Shirt Brewing Co

Black Shirt Brewing Co is a progressive, artisanal brewery located in the RiNo Art District in Denver, CO. The brewery was founded by brothers Chad and Branden Miller and Chad's wife Carissa. Our focus is on creating unique, assertive, vibrant, complex, and ultimately perfectly-balanced beer. We do everything by hand, in small batches. No gimmicks. No bull shit.

Hello Fall...

Fall showed it's head in a big fucking way here in Colorado. A year's worth of precipitation in a week, devastating floods, enormous damage, and already inches of snowfall in the high country; way too early for those affected to even have a chance at getting back to their homes to assess the damage. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Football is here, we have made several batches of red and green chili already, and we are considering long sleeves and pants - though probably gonna delay that as long as possible. Fall is incredible in Colorado. The aspens shine like gold on frost-covered mountains, morning air turns crisp, and the wind whispers sweetly "enjoy but get ready."

I am a born and raised Colorado boy - and even though the Farmer's Almanac isn't mirroring my instincts, I feel a big, long, wet winter heading our way. I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again; but I am ready to drink porters and stouts [including red versions] and enjoy some steep, deep powder! I'm not rushing it; the shoulder seasons are my absolute favorite, I just know how quickly it can all change around here. Fall is for relaxation, contemplation, and final preparation; get yourself a good book and make a big pot of coffee. Come by the brewery and see what is new. Sit on the patio and enjoy a beer in the best season to do so. Enjoy it and embrace it! Cheers and great beers!

The Beauty Of The Barrel...

When a beer is introduced to a barrel, a number of things can happen. There is always the hope that what is in your head will come through, and the beer will shine after it's time inside the darkest part of the brewery. There is the chance that unexpected things will happen, and you can celebrate the "happy accident." There is the chance that the beer will be completely fucked. Then there is a blend of these things, when the outcome is something you could never have anticipated, and the beer results in something better than you ever could have hoped for. The mystery, the learning process, the unknown, the calculated, and the application of all you've ever known that create the dynamic relationship between your beer and the barrel. We've been playing, and we've been quite happy with the results. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter to know just when these rare acoustic versions will be on tap.

This Week's Setlist...

...and Red Porter is now available in the growler. You've asked for it again, and again; finally, you can take that beautiful Porter with you wherever you wish.

We have also tapped our very first barrel-aged beers; Bitter and Red Porter, both aged in Leopold Bros Small Batch Whiskey Barrels. They are absolutely delicious and won't last long.

Spuntino and Old Major Are Now Carrying Our Beer...

Big name restaurants, big name chefs, big names in the front of house, and the skill and determination to back up the hype; Spuntino and Old Major are two fantastic restaurants in Denver that have just put our beer on their menu. We couldn't be more thrilled or thankful for the support from these places, as they are at the top of their game, and we believe our beer will pair quite nicely with their incredible cuisine. Hand-crafted, focused, dedicated, and committed. They share our ethos, now go support them - we just gave you another reason.

Buster was a major help in the delivery of that beer:

Lobster Bake at The Brewery...

East Coast Joe's has teamed up with Black Shirt Brewing Co to present a traditional East Coast Lobster Bake in the intimate and eclectic back yard at the brewery. The meal will include a 1.5lb lobster, steamers, corn on the cob, and roasted red potatoes. You will also have your choice of one personal 32 oz growler of our selection of Red Ales. There will be great music, great company, and this will be the perfect way to say farewell to summer and hello to a Colorado fall. We are limiting this evening to  people to keep it wonderful and intimate. We hope you'll join us.

Backstage at BSB...2013 Red Evelyn...

This beer is a special one for us - we brew it to honor our Grandma who was a special lady in our lives. The beer is an Imperial Red Rye IPA that comes in at 9.2% abv, 90 ibus. It is brewed with rye, Belgian candi syrup, Colorado wildflower honey, and hopped intensely with Simcoe, Citra, Willamette, Zythos, and Centennial hops. It is currently available on tap and in counter-pressure filled growlers, but not for long.

Here is a little peek into the brew day...
